Remy Bumppo’s “Hedda Gabler” at Theater Wit thru March 8th

Curtain Call Chicago - Review Date March 3, 2026

Remy Bumppo’s Hedda Gabler at Theatre Wit - Review By: Paul Lisnek

Remy Bumppo’s Hedda Gabler takes an old Ibsen classic and makes it feel alarmingly current. It is gripping, darkly funny, and intellectually stimulating—a production that clearly honors its classic roots, but establishes a contemporary sense of danger.

Artistic Director Marti Lyons shapes the 90-minute, no-intermission production with a clarity that never eases the underlying tension The pacing is kept brisk, yet not rushed as the feelings of fear and dark humor actually coexist throughout the play. The result is a psychologically and entertaining evening that is as captivating as it is unsettling.

The production’s greatest asset is its stage commanding Hedda, played by ensemble member Aurora Real de Asua. From the moment she steps into the scene, her frustration, intelligence and contempt drive every scene. She is clearly driving a dangerous game of manipulation of those in her current and past life but a power that seems recognized and permitted by those who interact with her. Indeed, surrounding Real de Asua is an ensemble which establishes the rich social world in which Hedda lives. The characters add depth and do not play like classic stock types.

Overall Impression

Remy Bumppo’s Hedda Gabler exemplifies what Remy Bumppo does best: present intelligent, high-impact thoughtful theatre that trusts its audience to reflect on life’s complexities.
